Classroom Sponsorship – Northern Laos

Background

When Wild Frontiers’ tour leader Mark Steadman helped set up Lone Buffalo, a community education venture in Phonsavan, northern Laos, our foundation was keen to become involved.

Laos Class Z4 Loas class 500x300

Lone Buffalo is helping to improve opportunities for young people in this rural farming community through quality, structured English study and football coaching. Four local teachers have been employed and trained and over 200 students are now attending classes.

Within the most heavily bomb-contaminated province in the world, the school is also involved in teaching students about UXO, unexploded ordnance awareness, which is literally lifesaving.

What we did

In 2014 the Wild Foundations Foundation started its sponsor programme with Lone Buffalo, supporting beginners English class Z4.

$100 a month classroom sponsorship, guarantees six hours of English tuition per week for a class of 15 to 25 young people.

The Outcome

The classroom sponsorship programs allows Lone Buffalo to offer the students free English lessons, making it the only free English schools in the province and one of only a handful in Laos.

With all students in class Z4 doing well in their end of course exam in March 2016 and moving up to an advanced class, the Foundation is now pleased to sponsor new beginners class 1C for the next school year.

1C is Lone Buffalo’s first specific beginners’ English class aimed at students aged from 11 to 14. Along with young people from the area, a special invitation was also extended to those working for bomb clearing organisations in the province, UXO Lao and Mines Advisory Group, to enrol their young sons and daughters in this special class.

Keep up with all the news from 1C on our blog and our facebook page.

Those travelling with Wild Frontiers in northern Laos will have the opportunity to visit the school and meet the students.
